Kitchen Table Housing & Homeless Chat

Invitation to a Nov 16, 7pm kitchen table Housing & Homeless chat: Which tasks should the LCA focus on in the next year?

The experts haven’t been able to fix our housing crisis – it may only be solved when ordinary people are finding the solutions. The Housing & Homelessness committee of Lowertown Community Association invites you to focus our work on the tasks that matter most to you. Where can the LCA make the most difference?

Today Ottawa has an estimated 2500 households who risk losing their home because of Covid-19. That’s on top of about 2000 people currently filling our shelters, and another 150 people estimated to be living unsheltered in parks, on the street and vacant lots. At the same time the city has an updated, but as yet unfunded, $1billion, 10-year plan to end homelessness, that still lacks clear accountability and effective governance.

Come out Nov 16 at 7pm, for a kitchen table chat about what we can do ourselves about ending chronic homelessness. For the link, please email to warrenhwaters@gmail.com

Which of these ideas below should be LCA’s priority? Please come to discuss any of your priorities at the Nov. 16 zoom-chat.

  1. Promote house sharing, accessory dwelling units, modular housing, etc
  2. Improve homeless street outreach service coordination
  3. Lobby for clearer accountability for tasks in 10-year homelessness plan update
  4. Identify owners of vacant lots and help them build affordable housing
  5. Recruit local landlords for affordable housing subsidy programs
  6. Promote a rental replacement bylaw requiring any rentals demolished be replaced
  7. Lobby to reduce development charges on new developments
  8. Lobby for applying inclusionary zoning in Lowertown
  9. Increase participation of homeless in LCA
  10. Increase zoning density in Lowertown
  11. Lobby for Universal Basic Income
  12. Lobby for emergency housing over the winter in response to anticipated increases in those experiencing homelessness from COVID19
  13. Lobby for increased mobile mental health service funding
  14. Other ideas welcome!
